About Us

Established in 2004, we exist to develop, promote and manage community use of the various schools sites within the PFI project in Rotherham.
We operate a ‘mixed economy’ where the ability of some groups to pay offsets the inability of others to pay – BLCL aims to make facilities available to all.
Involvement of the community is central to the way that BLCL works. Each school site has a management group which brings together a combination of local people, service providers, head teachers and other workers based in the area. Broadly speaking, this blend of people oversee the achievement of BLCL’s aims and objectives and contribute to the developing wider community use of the facilities.
Because BLCL is a not for profit company, we can seek to access funding which schools, the local authority or the private sector cannot. This adds to the development of community activity in Rotherham and means that broader plans could be achieved.
Whilst BLCL is allowed to make profits from lettings, as a not for profit company, it can only use that income to achieve its aims and objectives. In other words, any income has to be re-invested for the benefit of the local community and the schools or centres. Once again, BLCL is adding value to community activity.

"As manager of Sure Start Children’s Centre, I believe that Building Learning Communities helps us to engage with the wider community and to make good use of the building. By working in partnership with Building Learning Communities, we aim to make the facilities available to the community seven days a week and even into the evenings."
